How This Hourly to Salary Calculator Works

Converting an hourly wage to a salary is one multiplication: annual salary = hourly wage × hours per week × weeks per year. Everything else — monthly, biweekly, weekly, daily figures — is just that annual number divided into smaller pieces. The only thing that makes it tricky is the baseline sitting underneath it.

That baseline is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week × 52 weeks. It became the default because the Fair Labor Standards Act (1938) set 40 hours as the standard full-time workweek in the U.S., and employers, payroll systems, job boards and the Bureau of Labor Statistics all use it as the full-time convention. It is a convention, not a law — a 37.5-hour week gives 1,950 hours a year instead, and unpaid weeks off reduce the year further. Two unpaid weeks turn 2,080 paid hours into 2,000, which is why this calculator asks for paid weeks separately.

Worked example: $25 an hour at 40 hours a week for 52 paid weeks. Annual salary = $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000. Monthly = $52,000 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33; weekly = $25 × 40 = $1,000; biweekly = $52,000 ÷ 26 = $2,000; daily (8 hours) = $25 × 8 = $200. The reverse check: a $62,400 salary at the same schedule is $62,400 ÷ 2,080 = $30.00 an hour. A handy shortcut: at full time, doubling the hourly rate and reading it as thousands approximates the salary — $25 an hour is about $50,000 (exactly $52,000).

Practical tips

Compare offers on the same basis — usually annual.

Convert every offer to annual pay before comparing. An hourly rate that looks high can lose to a salary once hours and paid time off are counted.

Unpaid time off breaks the 2,080 shortcut.

If you are not paid for vacation, subtract those weeks. Two unpaid weeks on a $25-an-hour job cut the year from $52,000 to $50,000.

Gross is not take-home.

A $52,000 salary does not mean $52,000 in your pocket. Federal tax, FICA, state tax and benefits come out first — run the gross figure through the Paycheck Calculator.

Straight time only.

Overtime, bonuses and commissions sit outside this conversion. If you regularly work overtime, include those hours separately via the Overtime Pay Calculator.

Check the hours behind a salary.

A $62,400 salary at 40 hours is $30 an hour — but the same salary at 50 hours a week is only $24 an hour. The hours matter as much as the headline number.
